Magic Johnson for Buick 1980

An amusing 1980 commercial for Buick featuring basketball legend Magic Johnson and jockey Willie Shoemaker.

Buick advert that aired in December 1953

Buick is a luxury brand of General Motors (GM). Buick models are sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, Taiwan, and Israel, with China being its largest market. Buick holds the distinction as the oldest active American make. Many current Buick models are shared with other GM brands and global subsidiaries. Buick is currently the oldest still-active American automotive make, and among the oldest automobile brands in the world. It originated as the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company in 1899, an independent internal combustion engine and motor-car manufacturer, and was later incorporated as the Buick Motor Company on May 19, 1903, by Scottish born David Dunbar Buick in Detroit, Michigan. Later that year, the struggling company was taken over by James H. Whiting (1842--1919), who moved it to his hometown of Flint, Michigan, and brought in William C. Durant in 1904 to manage his new acquisition. Buick sold his stock for a small sum upon departure, and died in modest circumstances 25 years later. 1966 AMC Rambler Classic station wagon TV commercial

During Mitt Romney's campaign to win the Michigan primary in February 2012, the Romney campaign bought one of my vintage AMC clips for use in their primary TV commercial. (Mitt's spot is called "Growing Up." You can find it here on YouTube.) If you watch the spot, the second shot shows a Rambler wagon pulling into a driveway. That's the clip his people bought from me. At this time, AMC was in big trouble. When Roy Abernethy took over after Mitt's dad, George Romney, left American Motors, he tried to compete directly with The Big Three in size and horsepower. He lost big time. This no-nonsense spot acknowledges that AMC knew the American public had dismissed it as a boring, economy car company. The goal was to get them to reconsider American Motors. I thought I'd take the opportunity to show you the whole TV commercial. It's been digitized and color-corrected with amore. I'd love to have this wagon today. It's appropriately named: a Classic!

1965 Chrysler New Yorker TV Commercial

Brand New Styling was introduced in 1965. This really was a beautiful car. Note the glass covered headlamps and the clear Lens on the tail lights. These tailights didn't function well and were quickly dropped. They were years later featured again on a Chrysler, the Lebaron in 1977 and they didn't work then either and were again quickly dropped early in the production run

Ricardo Montalban - 1975 Chrysler Cordoba Commercial

Ricardo Montalban - Chrysler Cordoba Commercial Nov. 25, 1920 - Jan 15, 2009 RIP This is the commercial where most of us mistakenly thought Ricardo said "Rich Corinthian Leather" when he actually said "Soft Corinthian Leather". It was a marketing term invented by Chrysler to help sell cars and who can forget it? The commercial, itself was very well conceived. If you listen, through the distorted audio, you hear Spanish guitar and orchestra playing along with Ricardo's wonderfully accented sales pitch. When you bought this car, you weren't just buying a car! You were buying the luxury to be swallowed in seats upholstered with "Soft Corinthian Leather"... You were buying a Cor-doa-bah! Disclaimer: It has been recently pointed out that that car in this commercial is really a 1976 and the seats are cloth, not Corinthian leather. So much for continuity.
